How to Look After a Sick Guinea Pig: Not Eating or Pooping?!

Watch if you have a poorly guinea pig who is not eating! Skip to 03:35 for the home care information (still take them to the vets though!), but it may be useful to listen to the description of Pedro’s symptoms before this.

I’m very pleased to say that Pedro made a full recovery and although he did relapse after this video he finally started eating again after a total of 3 weeks of special care and syringe feeding. He had bloat and slowing of the digestive system, which can be very common in guinea pigs and caused by a range of factors, including changes in diet, stress, bad bacteria in the digestive tract and eating something they shouldn’t have or eating too much of a particular food.

I wanted to take the opportunity to share my experiences and show what you need and how to care for a sick guinea pig who isn’t eating. Gut stasis or slowing down of the digestive system (and associated bloat) can be the result of many things, and without treatment is often fatal. Good owners should be prepared for any illness in their piggies, don’t forget that they rely completely on us for their health ❤
