Cat Tuberculosis + Raw Diet Risk Update (should you be worried?) – Cat Health Vet Advice

If you’re feeding your cat a commercial raw diet, or any sort of raw food, could it be giving your cat tuberculosis? It sounds crazy, but it’s potentially true that raw diets cause TB in cats! While the initial investigation last year of a TB outbreak in cats only involved a small number of individuals, the recent situation update paints a much more serious picture of the risk.
To start with, 83% of the initially infected cats have died, a fact that’s pretty serious in itself. Also though, the outbreak has now been found to actually include 30 clusters of cats involving over 90 individual cats that have become infected with TB.
What all these cats had in common was that they were indoor-only cats and they were all fed exactly the same commercial raw food diet for cats.
To make matters worse, there is a real (all be it tiny) risk of tuberculosis being transmitted from cats to people.
