Green Spotted Scat Fish Care & Tank Set up Guide



Scatophagus argus also called the Green Scat is native to Indo-Pacific region coastal areas of Australia, New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Japan etc. Natural Habitat includes Estuaries, Mangroves & Lagoons. Green Scat as Juvenile stays in Freshwater & moves to Salt water as adult. There are to species of scats the green spotted scat or the red scat.They have spikes in their fins which can cause pain & dizziness if Stung. They can grow between 6 to 8 inches in home Aquarium & live for over 10 years of age.

Aquarium Care for Green Spotted Scat-
Its recommended to get these fish as Juveniles & Slowly move from High Saline Water to Brackish water laterally. Below information will help
Tank Size – Juveniles 50 Gallon or Bigger & Adults Need 125 or bigger
Water Parameters for Juveniles
Temperature range – 70Β° to 82Β° (21 to 28Β°C)
pH range – 7.5 to 8.5
Water Hardness – 12 to 18 dGH

Specific Gravity needs to be increased slowly at 0.02 by adding marine salt during water change. Mix marine salt separately in a container by adding about 2 to 3 tablespoons per gallon

Tank Decoration – Rocks & Seasoned Driftwood are good option’s to decorate the tank with Sand for Tank bottom .Plants usually don’t work due to Salinity in Water & Scats like to eat Plants. Freshwater plants stop growing at 1.015 Specific Gravity of

Tank Mates -Orange or Green Chromide,Colombian Catfish
Mono Angelfish, Brackish Water Mollies etc. Careful with smaller fish in tank Scats may eat them.

Food – They like Lettuce,Cucumber, Spinach, Zucchini. Readily available Fish food like Pellets, Flakes, Freeze dried worms can be fed.
