Watercolor Dogs: Tips to make your portrait not look so sad

My client sent me a picture of her Senior dog and asked me to paint her. But she asked if it was possible to make her look less “sad” in the picture.

It’s true that not all dogs show that huge smile with their tongue sticking out. Some have the eternal “puppy eyes” that make them look like they are begging for food or sad. It’s not that these dogs are actually sad, but we are used to seeing the happy pictures of dogs “smiling”.

In this video, I am sharing 3 tips to subtly change a dog’s facial expression to make them look less “sad”. These changes do not require re-drawing your portrait, or adding an open mouth with a tongue.

What do you think? Do you think I achieved what my client requested? Did I help make her Senior dog look a little less “sad”? Leave me a comment below. If you have any extra tips, please leave them in the comments section as well!
