Bird Foraging and Enrichment | Tips for Bird Owners
Birds love being busy. In the wild, they actively go out and forage for food, nest, and mates. Since they are “held in captivity”, they lose the opportunity to do these things and when they become bored, they scream, pick their feathers, and even destroy things.
What we can do as bird owners is give them opportunities to forage even if they are not in the wild. They can’t forage for nests. They’re not nesting because they live in cages. They can’t forage for mate. Although they bond with us, they are not really mating with us. What they can “forage” is food.
Here are some tips for your pet bird to feel like they are not held in captivity and that they still have opportunities to forage:
– Put wooden balls in a bowl and hide in their food
– Hang food in pieces of paper or cups
– Wedge vegetables between cage bars
– Create different stations for your bird to feed from
We can also keep them busy through the notion of enrichment. Enrichment involves foraging and food but it may also be by involving them in other activities. Giving them toys, puzzles, TV or a radio will definitely help in keeping them occupied and busy.
