Fish Focus – Freshwater Crabs

With a flexible body plan, crabs have successfully filled ecological niches far from the sea – some having wandered farther than others. The crabs offered to the freshwater aquarium keeper are a diverse bunch but all are largely amphibious and should be provided with opportunities to leave the water. Some, such as Geosesarma, are hunters that inhabit waterside vegetation and breed readily when offered a habitat that provides dry land as well as warm water. Others are mangrove dwellers that enjoy slightly brackish conditions and a diet rich in plant material in the shape of algae pellets.
With few exceptions, these are animals that require a specialised set up that may not be suitable for housing fishes as tank mates.
