Does My Pet Bird Need a Friend? | Tips For Bird Owners
Do pet birds need friends, or are they happy by themselves? The answer is complicated.
Birds are very social animals in the wild, but pet birds are different. Pet birds bond with their owners and often see the people around them as their “flock.” Some pet birds don’t even like being around other birds, as they prefer interacting with their human friends.
Dr. Laurie Hess says her pionus, Dale, likes his space and prefers to socialize with his people, rather than other birds. Dale’s cage is in the middle of the family space and he’s happy being around the people in his house. He often eats his bird food when his people are eating their food.
Additionally, adding another bird, if not done carefully, can cause emotional or physical trauma. So, if you do decide to bring a friend home for your pet bird, introduce them gradually rather than just sticking them together in a cage.
In summary, some birds are happier with other bird companions, while others bond with their human caretakers and see their people as their “flock.”
