African spur-thighed tortoises (Geochelone sulcata) are long-lived and large tortoises that make wonderful pets for intermediate to expert reptile keepers. Hatchlings are small and can fit in a 20 gallon enclosure while adults can grow to 100 pounds. No longer imported from Africa, African spur-thighed tortoises are widely bred in the United States and are available from pet stores, reptile expos, breeders and tortoise rescues.
