Tips For Managing Pets Dental Health
People know that oral health is very important. Many of us do our best to brush our teeth at least two times a day to ward-off cavities, gum dieses and more. Many studies also point to dental health playing a role in whole body health and the theory is no different for our pets. Dr. Jenny Norman of Ada Animal Hospital and Pet Perspectives mascot Roco joined Idaho Today’s Mellisa Paul in studio to share tips for managing your pets dental health. Dr. Norman says it is very important to simply brush your pets teeth, sharing that Veterans are now seeing gum disease as early as three-years of age in pets. Especially small dogs. She also added that there are a number of pet toothbrushes, pet toothpaste and other products that can make this process easier. She says it’s important to take the time to introduce your pet to the process as well. ‘Don’t just shove the toothbrush in your pets mouth,’ warns Dr. Norman. She also suggested to introduce the toothbrush and toothpaste as a treat the first few times, until your pet looks forward to the event and you can brush their teeth properly. She also said, just like humans, focusing on the back molars is very important as that is where most cavities and gum disease first develop. Along with brushing your pets teeth, Dr. Norman gave additional information about choosing the best chew toys for your pets (some can damage teeth) and when you should get a dental cleaning done on your fur-baby.
